Some of the latest spin coming from the Right involves the notion that cutting the wages and benefits of workers would help the economy recover.
That's a stupid, stupid idea. Our economy runs on consumer spending and consumers aren't some group separate from workers, consumers and workers are the same people. You can't increase consumer spending by cutting consumers wages.
The spin from the Right is especially aimed at unionized workers. They've attacked the UAW as if they are the cause of American auto manufacturers problems, rather than the victims of pathetic management and crappy foreign trade policies.
The Right has also been attacking civil servants, crying that they are too well compensated in a time when tax revenues are down. Of course the truth is that civil servants are reasonably compensated and all those non-union workers in the private sector are under-compensated for the work they do. The Right really hates civil servants because their ability to collectively bargain sets an example for other working people that might spur them to also want fair compensation.
If you want a clue as to what's behind all those conservative 'idea's" about how to deal with our collapsing economy, go read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine - The Rise of Disaster Capitalism"
"The only book of the last few years in American publishing that I would describe as a mandatory must-read. Literally the only one."
-Rachel Maddow
The past thirty years have seen our national wealth redistributed upward by conservative economic policies, with the wealthy getting wealthier and ordinary middle-class working people getting slowly ground down. As a result of that redistribution, our economy is now collapsing.
So far, the Governments response to a collapsing economy has been concerned with bailing out the wealthy on the back of future generations of working people. It's time for that to end.
The Employee Free Choice Act:
- Helps America’s working families improve their standard of living. Workers
in unions earn 30 percent higher wages and are 59 percent more likely to have
employer-provided health insurance.- Fixes a broken system that gives corporations far too much power. When
workers try and organize unions, they are often harassed and intimidated; 25
percent of companies unlawfully fire pro-union workers.- Restores fairness and the promise of the American Dream, with a robust
middle class, economic growth, and shared prosperity.
